The Shires Tom Thumb Rubber Pelham has shorter shanks than a regular pelham. It has a mullen mouthpiece made of soft and flexible rubber that many horses prefer. The mullen mouthpiece distributes pressure across the tongue and the bars of the horse’s mouth evenly. It is softer and gentler in its action than the metal equivalent. The feel and taste of the rubber is preferable to metal in a lot of sensitive horses, or horses being ridden by less sensitive and yielding hands. The rings, shanks and curb chain of this Tom Thumb Rubber Pelham by Shires is made of quality stainless steel. The stainless steel is a metal alloy with a minimum of 12% Chromium in its makeup. The Chromium lends its properties of corrosion resistance and shine to the stainless steel. Stainless steel never rusts and never needs polishing to look its best. The shanks of the Shires Tom Thumb Rubber Pelham are shorter and thus exert less leverage than other pelhams. The cheekpieces attach to the small upper rings, and the snaffle rein attaches to the large central ring. The curb rein attaches to the lower ring, or a set of bit converters can be fastened so the bit can be used with just one single rein. The curb chain should be adjusted so that it begins to apply pressure in the chin groove behind the lower lip when the bit rotates about 45 degrees in the horse’s mouth. This bit is available in different sizes.
