The Shires Tom Thumb Jointed Pelham has short shanks that are similar in shape and design to a Tom Thumb. The bit is made from top quality stainless steel, built to last a lifetime. The mouthpiece of the Shires Tom Thumb Jointed Pelham is a single joint, creating a ‘nutcracker’ effect in the horse’s mouth. This action applies pressure to the sides of the tongue, the bars and the corners of the mouth. The bit cheeks provide a curb action and put pressure on the poll as well. The pressure on the poll is exerted from the attachment of the cheekpieces of the bridle to the small upper bit rings. This bit is intended for use with either two reins: a snaffle rein and a curb rein, or with a bit converter. A bit converter is a short strap that buckles from the middle ring to the lower ring, joining the two. A single rein is then attached to this short strap, joining the action of what would be a snaffle and a curb rein together. There is a curb chain attached, which is activated when a stronger rein aid is applied and the bit rotates in the horse’s mouth. The chain then applies additional pressure on the lower lip. This is not a beginner bit. The Shires Tom Thumb Jointed PelhamÊis available in different sizes.
