The Collegiate Flat Running Martingale is a clean looking running martingale, with bold, solid and simple leather sections to build it. It is made from quality English leather. English leather is made using traditional tanning methods developed in small country tanneries in rural England. Deep tanning pits are used, with vegetable tannins to cure the leather, relaxing the fibres and lengthening them over time. The result is a softer, more pliable finished leather. This supple martingale adjusts in height with the girth loop that goes between the front legs. The neckstrap has a buckle too, to adjust the length. There should be an inch of slack in each fork of the martingale when the reins are taunt, in a straight line from the bit ring through the riders’ forearm. A running martingale is used to help keep the horses’head down, when it comes into an unnaturally high position. It places leverage downward on the reins when, and only when the head comes too high.
